Using the Tarot Deck to Tell a Tarot Story

 

Storytelling with the Tarot.

There are many different designs and tarot cards that you could use for storytelling. The most obvious choice for this story is the Rider-Waite tarot deck. The Rider Waite deck is the best-known of all of the tarot decks which makes it the logical choice since any of your clients who are familiar with tarot cards will instantly recognize it.

I have been pleasantly surprised at how much people love stories involving the Tarot so here is a story based upon one suit.

The suit of swords.

The King, Queen and Knight of swords rule the kingdom that is has been experiencing a civil war. The page of swords is a young man who enters the king's service. Unfortunately, the king's son is murdered (10 of swords). His sister wakes up from a nightmare (nine of swords) that tells her what's happened to her brother. She resolves to capture his murder. She is kidnapped, bound and kept prisoner (eight of swords). The lowly page sets off to rescue her (seven of swords). He is secretly in love with her. He has to travel far and wide (six of swords), but eventually finds and fights the enemy (five of swords). He thinks he has defeated them, but they come back and kill him (for swords). The sister escapes and she and her parents are brokenhearted as they realize, too late, the page's devotion (three of swords). The sister swears vengeance, and is blind to any thoughts of peace (two of swords). The Ace of swords, appearing from cloud, shows the people who lived by the sword, die by the sword. I encourage you to experiment by telling yourself stories with the cards. It's a great way to get to know your cards and you be able to entertain yourself and others with them. Telling one story at a time is enough. It's always better to leave people wanting more. If you promise another story the next time you will be welcomed back with open arms.

After you have become proficient in telling stories with the Rider Waite deck you might want to move on to one of the many other decks available to you. There are over 1200 different decks you can choose from. Some of the top seems are angels, animals, Celtic, Gothic, Fairies and Pagan or Wiccan. With each of these decks you have different symbolism and you can construct an infinite number of Tarot stories.
